Louis Ottens, who is credited with inventing the cassette tape, has passed away at the age of 94.
According to Rolling Stone, Ottens was an engineer at Phillips, and he led the team that was tasked to make reel-to-reel tapes into something portable.
The sad news was first reported by NRC Handelsblad, a Dutch newspaper. He died on March 6th in the Netherlands, and no cause of death was given.
Ottens was part of a documentary called "Cassette: A Documentary Mixtape" that was released in 2016. You can check out the trailer for that below, and if you want to watch the full doc, it's available to rent on Amazon Prime for $3.99.
The Phillips cassette made its debut in August of 1963 at an electronics fair, but it obviously took over a decade to catch on and become widely used for music.
