Marvel Now Owns Stan Lee's Likeness (For 20 Years At Least)

Comics legend (and co-creator of most of the Marvel Universe) Stan Lee passed away in 2018. Before his death, audiences looked forward to his fun cameo appearances in the MCU movies. Marvel Studios worked with Lee to stockpile some extra cameos toward the end of his life, but the last of those appeared in 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

According to iO9, Stan "The Man" Lee may soon be back in the MCU. Marvel has entered into an agreement with Genius Brands International and POW! Entertainment, giving them extensive rights to his name and likeness for the next twenty years.

Here's what the deal allows Marvel to do with Stan Lee:

  • use Stan Lee’s name and likeness in feature films, TV productions, at theme parks, experiences, and merchandising
  • use “digital technologies” and archival footage to imitate Lee’s likeness
  • have Stan Lee appear as a toy, on stationary, apparel, and video games/virtual reality
  • replicate, recreate, or use recordings of Lee’s voice
  • continue to use Lee’s signature

Reactions to the news have been split today. Some think this deal is creepy and disrespectful, while others are just excited at the prospect of having the cameos back and the assurance that Stan Lee's association with the Marvel brand he helped create will continue.
