PBSO: Jealousy A Motive In Murder Of Corrections Deputy

Authorities have announced a motive for the murder of a corrections deputy in Palm Beach County.

Sheriff Ric Bradshaw provided more information on the suspect, 32-year old Kevin Bennette as he was being taken to jail yesterday.

"The girlfriend of the deputy that was presently with him is a prior girlfriend of the suspect. And I think that he was extremely agitated over that and upset."

Bennette is charged with first degree murder for ambushing 39-year-old Deputy Basil Powell as he arrived at his home in Belle Glade Monday and night and opening fire on him. Bradshaw says he has a lengthy and violent criminal history.

"Domestic battery, aggravated battery, burglary, theft, aggravated domestic stalking, domestic violence by strangulation..."

The suspect was arrested using Powell's own handcuffs. He was first taken into custody on a warrant to collect DNA, when enough forensic evidence came through to charge Bennette immediately.

He was arrested with Powell's own handcuffs.
