A company that owns parking lots for 18-wheelers in the Central Florida area is working on one in Palm Beach County.
The seven acres of land along Southern Boulevard, west of the Turnpike, would fit about 200 semis and a managing partner of Discount Truck Parking says he is waiting for the permits to get approval so the paving can be done.
He says it would also be a safe place for truckers to keep their rigs.
"We have someone 24 hours looking over everything, trying to do rounds, making sure that there's no theft, there's nobody on site that shouldn't belong there."
It would come in handy for people like Juan Vargas who's been parking his semi in front of his home in Loxahatchee for years. He tells CBS 12 News that a new ordinance taking effect July 1st is not necessary.
"With the neighbors, it hasn't been an issue at all. The roads have been the same way since we started parking here. They haven't changed. They haven't deteriorated at all."
Vargas, who owns U.S. Expedited Services, Inc., says that if the order goes into effect and he has to move out, he'll comply with the law. He's also considering using the new lot if and when it opens.
Two truck owners recently filed a lawsuit against Palm Beach County, in an attempt to overturn the ordinance which states that owners with trucks weighing more than 16,000 pounds can no longer be parked on residential properties.
