BROOKSVILLE, FL -- There's a special event in Brooksville this weekend to honor those lost in a military air crash 80 years ago.
During World War Two, the US Army Air Force established dozens of airfields in Florida for pilot training, most of which are now civilian airports. One of them was in Brooksville, north of Tampa.
On October 3, 1943, a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, numbered #42-5229, crashed at the airport, killing 11 airmen.
What was Brooksville Army Airfield is now Brooksville's civilian airport, and a Saturday morning ceremony honors the fallen, including a reading of their names.
It takes place at the EAA Building at 9:30 a.m. (Gates open at 8:30 a.m.) There will also be five World War Two-era aircraft on site, as well as appropriate music performed by the Flying Musicians brass quintet. There will be a reading of the events of October 3rd, including the names of the fallen, a prayer, and a rendition of Taps.
