Man arrested for locking 12 dogs in South Florida trailer

Estero, FL - A man's been arrested for leaving 12 dogs locked in a camper at a South Florida rest stop.

Estero police say Jose Carmen Rodriguez was arrested after the dogs were found locked in a camper at a Fort Myers rest stop off Daniels Parkway.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, a witness called 911 to report they heard whimpering inside Rodriguez’s camper.

A Florida Highway Patrol K-9 unit and Lee County Animal Services were dispatched to the camper.

As troopers were about to break into the trailer, Rodriguez showed up and unlocked the door.

Senior FHP Trooper Kenn Watson confirms to NBC 2 News that ten dogs and two puppies were found inside the vehicle and that "what those troopers saw on the inside was terrible. There was a lot of feces. It was a mess. Very little water. Very little food."

Animal Services believe the inside temperature was 114.5 degrees.

All 12 dogs survived and were transported to Lee County Department of Animal Services.

Rodriguez was arrested.
