Jared Leto played The Joker in 2016's Suicide Squad. His take on the character, with face tattoos and metal "grillz" in his mouth, was not a huge hit with fans. Warner Bros. announced a spinoff movie focusing on his version of The Joker, but most people assumed that project died when last year's Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, came out and went on to break the all-time box office record for an R-rated film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Thirty Seconds to Mars front man is getting another shot at playing the character thanks to Zack Snyder's Justice League project at HBO Max. Snyder was forced to exit the 2017 film during production and was very vocal about never getting to realize his vision. Fans campaigned for years and the studio finally agreed to spend millions of dollars on bringing the Justice League actors back to reshoot some things and to add new material to flesh the story out into a mini-series to premiere on their HBO streaming service. Leto was the DC movie universe's Joker when Snyder's Justice League was conceived, so he's coming back into to play the character opposite Ben Affleck's version of Batman. The Joker did not appear in the version of the movie that came out in 2017, so his inclusion in this may indicate that there will be a lot more new stuff than originally expected. It's probably an extended flashback, but anything is possible if they're really turning a movie into a 6-episode streaming series.
