Turns Out, The 'Hamilton' Movie Won't Be Eligible at Next Year's Oscars

Disney+'s Hamilton movie won't be winning any Oscars.

After the film hit Disney+, many were quick to ponder whether the film had any chance at scoring any love from The Academy, but it turns out, the release, which was a recording of a 2016 performance, isn't eligible for honors. As you might know, the Academy recently changed its rules to allow streaming films to be eligible for the 2021 ceremony, particularly since COVID-19 halted the release of so many theatrical projects, but Hamilton does not fall under that category.

As per the the 93rd Academy Awards Special Rules for the Documentary Awards, "works that are essentially promotional or instructional are not eligible, nor are works that are essentially unfiltered records of performances." Part of the intrigue falls on creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who serves as a producer of the film, and is a contender for completing the EGOT stature. He already has an Emmy, Grammy and Tony to his name.

It might have seemed like Hamilton could sneak into the mix of nominations as a filmed version of Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!, a biographical one-man play about Harry Truman, scored some Oscar love in 1976. However, a source close to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed that as a recorded stage production, Hamilton is not eligible for award consideration. Either way, the 93rd Oscars Awards are bound to be an interesting watch. The ceremony was recently postponed two months and set to take place April 25, 2021.
